WHY SHOULD WE TAKE CARE OF OUR MITOCHONDRIA
Mitochondria is a component present inside the trillions of
cells, which is responsible for the production of energy in the form of ATP. It
is also called a power house of the cell. It is responsible for most of the
cellular functions of the body. Each cell has hundreds and thousands of
mitochondria, they are found in large concentrations in heart, brain and muscles.
There are about 100 trillion mitochondria in our body. In each of these
mitochondria there are about 18000 assembly lines to produce ATP. When
mitochondria become dysfunctional, it slowly starts disrupting the biological
processes. Your metabolism becomes slow, you start experiencing fatigue, tiredness, memory loss, and starts aging rapidly.
Many factors are responsible for the damage of mitochondria.
Oxidative stress, when there are more number of free radicals and less antioxidants,
rapid accumulation of free radicals leads to oxidative stress, which in turn
leads to dysfunctional mitochondria. Environmental factors like smoke,
pollution, household chemicals, stress, sugar, nutrient deficient diet, toxins,
unhealthy lifestyle, lack of sleep are all responsible for the damage.
Ways to boost your
mitochondria
·
Exercise,
strength training, walking and interval training are responsible to enhance
the function and number of mitochondria.
·
Diet rich
in antioxidants, colorful fruits and vegetables which are full of
antioxidants and phytochemical are very beneficial for mitochondrial health
and makes you look younger. One should aim for 6-8 servings of vegetables.
·
Avoid
sugar and processed food, sugar is responsible for producing free radicals
and oxidative stress, avoid junk and processed food which damages the
mitochondria.
·
Omega 3
fatty acids, food rich in omega 3 found in fish, chia seeds, flax seeds,
walnuts, hemp seeds are very helpful in developing the membrane of
mitochondria. Mitochondrial nutrients like B vitamins, coenzyme q 10,
creatinine, magnesium found naturally in green leafy vegetables, seeds, nuts,
sea foods are very beneficial. Cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, kale,
cabbage are super mitochondrial boosting foods.
·
Meditation
and quality sleep, helps to build new ones.
Taking care of mitochondria will slow the
aging process and will help you lead a healthy life.
